Blackburn Rovers Vs Tottenham Preview

After the magic of Wednesday and the revelation of the Christmas Party comes a trip to Blackburn and a physical tussle with Big Sam’s men. Preparing for the rocket that Harry has promised for after the game I am sure that the team will want to put on a good performance in an effort to seek leniency from the Manager.

So can we achieve it? I doubt that the winning side will be changed so once again Luka, Keane and Jenas will sit on the bench waiting for an opportunity. I hope to see Wilson push on from his Wednesday night performance at a ground where he was sent off last year – quite unjustly for the second yellow. His performance will be instrumental in setting up a winning performance ably supported by Michael Dawson who I hope retains the captain’s armband.

One feature of his performance on Wednesday was his offering of advice to others during the game from close quarters on specific points rather than a general “come on”. That’s the sort of captaincy we’ve missed for a long time and I welcome it back to the field. I’m also looking for Niko Kranjcar to weave some more magic on the left as he makes his £2 million fee look more laughable by the week.

It also puts pressure onto Tom Huddlestone who must be starting to look over his shoulder with Luka getting closer to match fitness, though to be fair I would not make the change quite yet until after a solid substitute performance from the Croat.

Hopefully Peter Crouch’s touch will return and I hope he is asked to contribute on the ground in counter attack play because he can be much better at this than we think. We are best when we play on the ground and when Defoe is brought into play at away games he can be extremely dynamic. Let’s hope the link up play works as it did Wednesday rather than last Saturday.

And so to Lennon. Will he get space? Will he be double teamed. No and Yes will the answers Sam has planned so can he shake the shackles? Hopefully Charlie can bring him onto the action quicker than he did against Wolves so that Aaron can devastate them with his pace. I fancy him to score by cutting inside and beating Robbo all ends up.

Prediction: Looking for 2-0 but its on the road and we may not be able to keep them out. We have to hope that the line follows the Dawson lead.

Tottenham Vs Manchester City Preview

This is the game we have got to win if we want to have any hope at all of a T4 finish. And not only that, we need to get our show back on the road. Earlier in the season I ran a ruler over the two squads and concluded that the weakness Manchester City have is at centre back where Toure and Lescott have still not established a successful partnership. Whoever we play up front we need to exploit that and throwing hopeful balls into the area from 100 yards is not going to be helpful to our cause.

City will be without Bellamy but they have such riches up front that our hearts will remain in our mouths for the duration of the game. The bloke who used to play for Arsenal and usually scored against us will be back and we should keep a close eye on him. Can Bassong and Dawson keep these guys marked at set pieces to give us something to build upon? It’s going to be one of the tales of the tape come 10.00 tomorrow night.

Elsewhere Wright-Phillips is injured De Jong a doubt and Modric not quite ready to start. Therefore it will be Saturday’s starting midfield for us with a toss up of Dos Santos or Jenas for the bench alongside Luka. I would go with Keane and Defoe once more and hope that the link play lives up to the early games of the season. For me it is important for Defoe to get an early shot as it settles him and encourages him to play the team game. Saturday’s performance mirrored a number of his games for the club. Over anxious from a lack of involvement he tries too hard to gets shots off ignoring the run of others. If he scores it is great but in these games it rarely happens.

So to the fullbacks. Bridge is a doubt for them and for us Corluka was too slow Saturday and Assou-Ekotto a little off on his first touch. They can both play better and need to do so to hold off Bale and Hutton. Unfortunately Bale showed against Everton why he has not been starting in this position all too easily allowing the Everton debutant to get round the back and cross so Benoit will start. Both guys need to work well with their wingers and because City may fancy it more than Wolves did I expect Lennon and Kranjcar to get opportunities top create problems.

If they do we can win it; if they don’t we may well struggle.

Finally, Tom Huddlestone and Wilson Palacios. Wilson needs to mark his territory and stick to it winning the ball and laying it to others to do damage. Tommy needs to mix it up. His Hoddle like balls are fantastic but he must decide on occasions to push through the middle carrying the ball in an effort to create doubt in the defenders mind and create space for RK and JD. We know he can score but he won’t unless he shoots. He cannot do that if he remains too deep looking for the showboat pass.

Whatever the result I hope we see a good game. If we play well and lose I will accept that. I won’t like it but City have power throughout the side and we have not been on song in the last few games sufficiently to close them out.

Love to see a 2-1 to us but a draw may be a good result.   Whatever happens let’s all get behind the team!

Tottenham Vs Wolves Preview

I’ve got a soft spot for the Wolves. When I joined the school Subbuteo league in the mid 1970’s Spurs had been taken so I chose Wolverhampton Wanderers instead. They had a decent side in those days and were always on the fringe of trophies losing to us in the UEFA Cup final and winning the league cup beating Manchester City. My subbuteo team were pretty good as well!

Tomorrow should be all about three points as long as we are not too casual. We might even keep a clean sheet – it’s certainly a chance. The word is that Wilson is fit to start and if that is the case who drops off the bench to accommodate Modric? I expect to see him finish the game by getting at least 15 minutes. There is talk of a massive bust up between Harry and David Bentley which Harry has played down in his pre match press conference along with a christmas party. Unfortunately some of our lot would not be back from the bender for the West Ham game if one was held so Harry is only protecting them.

I think Harry is spot on here. These guys are professional sportsmen who earn a lot of money. In comparison to the lives of the majority of folk sitting on the terraces every day is a party to them so that should be held in abeyance until something has been won. If the players have watched how we gave away last week’s game at Everton they probably won’t fancy a party anyway, it’ll be sleeping pills to stop them lying awake!

Tomorrow is therefore a chance to show how to close out the game again. Everton got up their gander and with the home crowd were able to claw their way back into it. Wolves are away and with no Saha or Yakubu in the starting line up let alone on their bench have limited opportunities to unsettle an on form Spurs.

I will go for a 3-0 win for us – and hope I do not have to eat my words!

I would also be unchanged as I feel Benoit plays well at home but looking to bring Luka and maybe Robbie into the action at some point in the match.
