Up for the Cup – Tottenham Hotspur Vs Peterborough United Preview

Despite the number of places between the two sides and contrast in form this game presents a conundrum for Harry Redknapp. We must win. Not only to carry on our series of victories and confidence into the Liverpool game but to get us off to a good start in a competition which we should believe we can win.

The FA Cup differs to the Carling Cup. The third round sees the entry of the top two divisions so the opportunity of a first or second division side is much reduced. Despite it being at home and Peterborough struggling in the Championship we must look on with caution as they have absolutely nothing to lose and can give it their all. If we win easily so we should have but if they make it tough and maybe nick a goal then we might struggle and Peterborough are the heroes.

I don’t expect Posh to win. If we played our second string we should thrash them but accidents can happen. Harry will put as his priority the top four spot but the Cup is a proud tradition for Spurs and it would be good to win a trophy and start the catch up on our top 4 rivals who have all caught and passed us since our last win in 1991. Harry knows that but will want to protect players for Liverpool if he possibly can.

I would therefore expect Ledley to sit it out in favour of Bassong after playing against West Ham on Monday. Dawson should start as will Gomes but I think Hutton and Bale may make up the back four with Corluka on the bench in case of injury.

In midfield we know Lennon cannot play so will Bentley get a look in or will it be Luka on the right? I would give Bentley the game. I would also start Modric but hopefully bring him off after an hour at the most giving Kranjcar the balance. I might also bring in Jenas to play alongside Huddlestone giving Palacios to chance to avoid another booking.

Up front Keane and Crouch allowing Defoe the chance to sit on the bench in case we cannot hit the target!

Prediction: Another 3-0 victory extending the number of clean sheets plus avoiding Man Utd in the next round!
